Essay: Is Norway’s Suspected Murderer Anders Breivik a Christian Terrorist?

“If bin Laden is a Muslim terrorist, Breivik and McVeigh are surely Christian ones. Breivik was fascinated with the Crusades and imagined himself to be a member of the Knights Templar, the crusader army of a thousand years ago.”

  1. Unquestionably.

I agree with Dawkins that non fundamentalist religion is the breeding ground for fundamentalist religion. When one is encouraged not to question; not to think; to blindly obey a “holy book” instead of listening to one’s conscience, one is on a slippery slope below which lies the valley of fascism and terrorism.

    • C Quick,

I could not agree with you more. Since Norway’s tragedy, at the hand of a right-wing Christian terrorist, I have noticed two interesting, albeit predictable, responses from Christians.

      1. “He is not really a Christian; he is a madman that is mentally ill.” Why is it that when a right-wing Christian terrorist commits an act of terrorism it is presupposed that the Christian has a mental condition, but if a Muslim terrorist commits an act of terrorism the Muslim is presumed to be an Islamic terrorist?

      2. “Anything to an extreme is bad.” Well, this tragedy was committed by a right-wing religious (I understand it may be debatable) extremist. Consider this, if you will, religious extremists would not exist if there were no religion.
