Conservative intellectuals don’t have a candidate in the 2012 GOP primary, and they’re making their worry more and more public. “To many conservative elites, Rick Perry is a dope, Michele Bachmann is a joke, and Mitt Romney is a fraud.”
This became a particularly heated issue back in June when Illinois granted same-sex couples the right to form civil unions and, therefore, the right to jointly adopt. The Catholic hierarchy didn’t like the new law, and several Illinois dioceses threatened to stop providing adoption services if they had comply with it. State officials didn’t seem to mind, though. They simply informed Catholic Charities that the agency’s contract to provide foster care and adoption services would not be renewed.
Dominionism, an academic term for a strain of evangelical Christianity that mandates believers to take over the institutions of society in order to implement God’s law on earth, flows from the theology of Christian Reconstructionism, whose proponents see as their ultimate goal the reconstitution of biblical law as the law of the land.
Corporations are a special breed of people, motivated solely by self-interest. Corporations seek to maximize return on capital by leveraging productivity and paying the least possible amount for taxes and labor. Corporate executives pledge allegiance to their directors and shareholders. The dominant corporate perspective is short term, the current financial quarter, and the dominant corporate ethic is greed, doing whatever it takes to maximize profit.
No religion: What was Lennon summoning? For starters, a world without “divine” messengers, like Osama bin Laden, sparking violence. A world where mistakes, like the avoidable loss of life in Hurricane Katrina, would be rectified rather than chalked up to “God’s will.” Where politicians no longer compete to prove who believes more strongly in the irrational and untenable. Where critical thinking is an ideal. In short, a world that makes sense.
