Because of the chronic competitiveness of american society the hatred of anything “government” the demonization of teachers as the purveyors of socialism , and the fact that most americans get little or no opportunity to travel overseas and experience other societies they are accused of being dumb.
I met many young american students on my travels in the seventies and found them to be fantastic people the ignorance and bigotry seems to be concentrated on those who never leave mainland USA.
Americans, stupid?
Surely not.
Only the Evangelists!
Dangerous – YES!
The stats do show that the more education a person receives the more areligious they will become.
I would like to know who many Americans were surveyed, and I think it is vital to investigate the education system. Perhaps the “knowledge deficit” of Americans applies to more than just the Muslim tradition, maybe it relates to any perceived ‘alternatives’ to the “all american way”. The film Pleasantville is the best representation in popular culture of this insular mindedness. I wonder how many Americans see themselves in that film?
