Thus, Martin Luther King, Jr., writing his Letter From Birmingham Jail, says: “We will have to repent in this generation not merely for the hateful words and actions of the bad people but for the appalling silence of the good people.” King had come to recognize the bigger enemy was not the KKK or the Citizens Councils but the white liberal who when saying, ‘not now’, really meant ‘never.”
