  1. Anger, despair, and hate are the easiest, most natural reactions to events that shake our reality. That’s why we see such petulant behavior on the political right.

    At first, I was going to say something snarky like Vonnegut clearly wrote this before the Donald Trump phenomenon and the political madness that has gripped large swaths of the American public. But, now that I think about it, Vonnegut also saw the coldness of mind and heart that wrought the Vietnam war and all its unfathomable atrocities, the rise and cynicism of the Christian right, the backsliding in civil rights, and on and on. So, I guess he had seen the worst and still felt able to speak of holding on to the best part of your humanity. However, it is really, really hard to do today when you feel like all around you have gone stark raving mad.
