1. I interpret this to suggest that the Democrats talk a leftish game but, operationally, hew to the the right, or at least center-right. Interesting, since it is generally perceived that the American public is symbolically conservative but operationally liberal… more or less the opposite. That is, most folks like the symbology and rhetoric of self-reliance but like the benefits of a socially oriented political economy. So the problem seems to be that Democrats continue to fail miserably at framing their politics. They should talk ‘right” but act ‘left’. Actually, isn’t that what the Republicans do? They talk about reducing deficits and entitlements but when they have the power to do so, they don’t.
