I’m not quite so concerned about the relative costs — the prison inmates, after all, are being housed and fed and sometimes medicated in addition to being restrained, and $40k isn’t THAT much for living expenses once you deduct the cost of having to hire 3 people to keep a 24-hour watch on every so many prisoners. And if you were to start cutting the inflated administrative salaries and eliminating the more idiotic things which start showing up in the curriculum around 6th grade in the U.S. (did you have “Guidance” class? A waste of time and money.) then $8000 wouldn’t be THAT bad. The scary thing about American prisons isn’t the price per prisoner, it’s the number of prisoners.
