Great painting. Our most hallowed philosophers are so often portrayed surrounded by books, gazing out windows in thoughtful repose whereas here Voltaire is–like you and I–simply putting his pants on one leg at a time. Recommend folks go to the article link; it’s a good summary of how what we call the Enlightenment has been and is still received by historians and philosophers.
