Happened to see this segment. Affleck kind of took me aback because I thought Harris’ thesis was sufficiently contained and straightforward. It is demonstrably true that great numbers of muslims around the world hold values that are illiberal and counter to liberal democracy. To cower from saying these things, because you are afraid of being charged with essentialism (as Affleck was quite to do), weakens liberal thought. I think Harris and Maher would be happy to concede they are wrong, if Affleck and others would show us evidence that Islamic societies can promote liberal values, especially the right to reject religion.
