Always Question Authority 
Amazing how these hoary doctrines–e.g., “trickle-down,” etc.–continue to have traction long after their premises and conclusions fail perennially. What is it in the American psyche that is so willing to eschew evidence for mythology. To wit, who has the media turned to for counsel and punditry on the latest Iraq mess–the very people who destabilized the region in the first place!
