  1. Let’s not assign too much causality to the word ‘religion’, the result of which is lazy thinking and analysis. On its own, ‘religion’ is a very unstable word, whose meaning caroms all over the place. The list of injuries and harms Bill lists here have drivers that originate in places other than religion: sexual repression and dysfunction, fear, greed, xenophobia, nationalism, to name just a few. This is not to say that religious dogma, doctrines, canon, and law have no role to play in our social ills and injustices. Religious thought and tradition is a prime weapon in shutting down inquiry and debate, in ossifying thought, and in reinforcing institutional authority and hierarchy. As such, religion is used to mask and authenticate the more primeval sources of the human-on-human infliction of pain and suffering and social injustice. We should critique religion for what it actually contributes to human suffering, which is already substantial, not as a one-word-fits-all bogeyman.

    • Heisenberg,

Your comment, “. . . religion is used to mask and authenticate the more primeval sources of the human-on-human infliction of pain and suffering and social injustice,” was absolutely brilliant! It acknowledges the core of the human condition, and the not free will that motivates us.

      In Reason,
      Madison
