POLICING FOR PROFIT: “Why Red Light Cameras are a Scam” / Vox ☮

Redlight camera tickets aren’t just a nuisance to drivers, they also cost cities millions.

Many drivers are familiar with receiving the dreaded automated traffic enforcement photo for running a red light. While red light cameras have been reported to reduce broadside crashes, it has been shown these cameras increase rear-end collisions as well. In addition, numerous tickets aren’t going to people running straight through red lights, but drivers failing to make a complete stop while turning on red. Safety is touted as the biggest concern but there are better long term solutions than municipalities installing red light cameras. Building more roundabouts and lengthening yellow lights are just two of several cheaper alternatives to red light cameras.

SCIENCE – ASTRONOMY: “Welcome to Jupiter!” / The Big Picture RT / Thom Hartmann ☮

Dr. Leroy Chiao PhD, Former NASA Astronaut & International Space Station Commander joins Thom. Earlier today – at 3:18 Greenwich Mean Time – NASAs “Juno” spacecraft successfully reached Jupiter and entered the gas giants orbit. Scott Bolton – principle investigator for the Juno mission described his relief when orbit was achieved – telling The Guardian that “There’s a mixture of tension and anxiety because this is such a critical manoeuvre … The rocket motor has to burn at the right time, in the right direction, for just the right amount of time.” It took the spaceship 5 years to make the 1.8 billion mile trip from Earth to Jupiter and The Juno probe is equipped with 29 sensors and 9 instruments that will study the planet for the next 20 months. The probe will be making a map of the planet before its instruments finally fail and the probe falls to Jupiter’s surface.

GUN CONTROL: “Father Kills Son, Spouts NRA Talking Points” / The Young Turks / Cenk Uygur ☮

A father in Florida accidently killed his son while shooting handguns at an indoor gun range. He blames himself and says it was “operator error.” Cenk Uygur, host of The Young Turks, breaks it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.

“A Florida father blamed himself for the “operating error” that resulted in him killing his 14-year-old son in an accidental shooting at a Sarasota gun range on Sunday afternoon.

“The gun didn’t kill my boy. I did,” 64-year-old William Clayton Brumby told CNN in an interview published Tuesday.

“Every round in the gun is your responsibility,” he added. “When it fires you need to stand to account for it. That’s what I’ve spent the last two days doing, accounting for my operating error.”

Brumby fatally shot his son Stephen in what he deemed “a very freak accident” at the High Noon Gun Range. After firing a round, an empty shell casing reportedly ricocheted off the wall and fell into the back of William Brumby’s shirt. While trying to fish it out with his right hand, which was holding the handgun, he accidentally fired the weapon at Stephen, who was standing directly behind him.

CNN reported that Stephen Brumby was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital but died from the shot, which struck him in the jugular vein.”
