I don’t keep quiet to further tolerance, I’m silent because the threats are real. Open my mouth and come out to prove I’m right? No. Don’t need to. Pat just admitted saying the wrong thing will get you killed. Nothing to prove. Yeah, small-minded bullies: by the billions.
The danger to liberal values is only partially related to the fanatics of any religious stripe. Like any bully their success is proportionately related to the amount of resistance they meet in society. The ‘good’ kids on the playground could quickly shut down or shut up a schoolyard tyrant–they typically have the numbers to do so. What they too often lack is a leader who will call out the bad behavior for what it is. I’m not sure if our liberal and secular ideals are being threatened as much by billions of bullies as they are by the billions of people who don’t chastise the relative few who wish to tyrannize the many.
I can think of no greater response than to quote the late, great Christopher Hitchens:
“Never be a spectator of unfairness or stupidity. Seek out argument and disputation for their own sake; the grave will supply plenty of time for silence.”
