I agree with this thesis but I also want argue that there was never any golden age of American democracy where there was an enlightened, well-read electorate making informed decisions. We have always existed within a relatively free society by the narrowest of margins. Each generation of Americans has to battle to just keep what it has and each generation has been largely formed and shaped by images largely based on myths, both liberal and conservative. Democracy, even the relativized democracy we enjoy, is still a new thing in history; there is a long way to go before we can claim it as a new historical condition.
