  1. In the old days, the church created such a fear and dread for spending the afterlife in hell, people simply remained in the church out of fear of that hell. But today most people choose not to listen to that anymore and live their own life.

  2. This is all quite true but how do we explain the willingness of so many to choose exactly the religious offering of escape from the responsibility of thought? Certainly indoctrination and social pressure play a role but I am not sure it can all be explained by indoctrination. We are witnessing the same phenomenon in the political arena. There too the responsibility to think critically is being abandoned by large numbers of people. And again, in this area as well, while there is plenty of indoctrination to be had, most people are choosing who they listen to and who they will consider authoritative. The central question, then, is why are people choosing to abandon thought and reason? What is it about twenty-first century reality that is so anathematic to facts, science, and reason?
