Aphorism: On the Ridicule of Religious Belief

By Madison S. Hughes (10.03.2011)

One has no choice but to ridicule religious belief.

The character House in the television medical drama of the same name once said, “If you could reason with religious people, there would be no religious people.” That is profoundly insightful. Any attempt to address religious belief with reason and logic to a believer will leave one with the same frustrations Sisyphus must feel.

In sum, address the rational with reason, and the irrational with ridicule.

Why Are Religious Conservatives So Scared of Gay Sex?

What gives with all the hatred for gay people coming from conservatives, even as the rest of country is beginning to get over long-held prejudices? Part of it is just straight-up protectiveness of heterosexual privilege . . .

It’s common for conservatives to suggest that accepting homosexuality means accepting pedophilia, because they see both as outrageous perversions instead of making the distinction between non-consensual and consensual behavior . . .

The hostility toward sex for pleasure hasn’t prevented men in red states from becoming the biggest consumers of porn.

Pulpit Perversion Sunday: The Religious Right’s Partisan Scheme To Politicize Churches

The [Alliance Defense Fund] sponsored observance has one goal: to pave the way for Religious Right leaders to forge fundamentalist churches into a disciplined voting bloc . . .

American clergy are perfectly free to address any religious, moral and political issues they wish. The only limitation is that they cannot use their tax-exempt resources to endorse or oppose political candidates . . .

“For some religious conservatives, this policy isn’t just unwise; it’s unconstitutional,” the newspaper continued. “But tax exemption isn’t a constitutional right. It’s the creation of Congress, which has the right to attach conditions to that benefit. Put another way, churches may have a 1st Amendment right to comment on elections, but they don’t have the right to a tax exemption.”

The Mass Media’s Disgraceful Coverage of Occupy Wall Street

For those who believe we have a right/left divide in the mass media, coverage by FOX News and The New York Times must shatter all such delusions.  Let’s be clear on this.  Both conservative and “liberal” media outlets are playing for the same team . . .

In fact, it is up to the intellectuals and educated class to stand up for the poor and fight power, because people working fifteen hours a day at minimum wage do not have the time and resources to stand up for themselves and speak out against a cruel system that has destroyed their lives . . .

Before I started following politics two years ago, I never imagined that FOX News could be as evil as critics say it is.  It’s worse.  It truly is Nazi-style propaganda. Their coverage of the mass arrests that occurred at Union Square Saturday illustrates this perfectly.
